Networking for executive assistants can be really fun!

They say your net worth is determined by your network. I do believe the more people you meet, connect with, and get to know, the more opportunities arise and the more enriched your life will be. What is one great way to meet new people? You guessed it! Networking.

For many people—especially you introverts out there—networking can be intimidating. However, networking success relies on how you perceive it. When viewed as a pressuring situation—one in which you have to make an outstanding first impression, nail your 30-second elevator pitch, and be able to ‘work the room’ with ease and grace—it may appear impossible! If, on the other hand, networking is viewed as an exciting opportunity—one to meet new people, enter into a curious conversation, and potentially create new business and/or personal connections—it may not seem so bad after all.

As you learn ways to become more comfortable networking and meeting new people, you may just find that what was once fearful, has now become fun. Here are three simple, yet helpful, tips for making networking less of a chore:

Be Curious

I’m sure you’ve been at a business event or mixer where you’ve experienced those people who immediately dive into who they are, what they do, and what their life story is all about before you’ve even said hello. You’ll soon notice that people enjoy talking about themselves. We often feel pressure to have to dominate the conversation. Not so! Be the one to ask the questions and conversations will flow smoothly and naturally.

Be Interested (and interesting!)

Now that you are comfortable asking questions, be sure to listen to the answers! Watch that your words, tone, facial expressions, and body language show you are interested. When questions are directed at you (eventually that will happen!) be open to share some of the many interesting facts about yourself and what you do. If you are interested in what you have to say, others will be too.

Be Yourself

Perhaps at some point or another you’ve felt that pressure to stand out in a crowd, attempt to ‘wow,’ or be the funny person. Don’t try to be anyone else other than yourself. I know it sounds cliché, but it is especially important in networking situations. It is exhausting trying to keep up with cracking jokes when it doesn’t come naturally to you. You’re only going to build real rapport and make lasting connections when you are truly being yourself. So, be down-to-earth, keep it real, and show up as you.

There you have it. Remember these simple strategies—stay curious, interested, interesting, and—above all—yourself. Happy networking!
